I wonder if kids know that most of the sophisticated games they play are adaptions of simple games kids have played through the centuries. Street Fighter, for example, is just Rock Sissors Paper. Blanka’s powerful spin tackle attack is beaten by Chun Li’s low power/fast kick, and so on. Actually, the game is only fun until you figure this out, so I hope I didn’t ruin it for you. (As everyone is just rushing out go get SF IV)

The reason I mention that this information is a buzz-kill is as follows: Let’s say you’re happily playing the game, and consistently you get to the 4th battle and loose, perhaps sometimes getting past and falsely believing that you’re somehow improving. If that’s you then all you’re doing is mashing buttons. Good luck son, you’ll need it. However, once you realize that every attack has a counter attack, regardless of how good you think you are at the game you just hit the right button and you’re done. Anyone can learn it. That’s the bad part. Knowing this, the next time you lose you’ll realize its not because you’re not good enough, its because you didn’t take the time to memorize all the moves. Thus, the game is now as boring as math homework. Memorize the button combinations.

I am not inspired to memorize buttons, therefor I will not master the game, end of story. The game is now ruined. I was happier not knowing this, sorry to have passed this information on to you.

Blizzard Boycott

Well, I’m done with blizzard games. I used to play diablo II until the great blizz decided I did something wrong, whatever that means. I received a notice (like many others) that my account has been suspended. I sent an email asking for clarification, explanation, anything. I get nothing in reply. A couple weeks later my key and accounts are delete from their system.

I thought I’d poke around and see what happens to others with their blizzard games and came across this blog. Its pretty typical. Post on forums from other gamers/fanboys insist you have to install some malicious software or something to try to cheat the system to get banned, but this is not so. One little hiccup on Blizzards end and you’re done for. Whatever time you put in your characters are gone forever along with your ~$50.

I suppose I could rant on about customer service, etc, but at the end of the day that company has made it clear that they don’t care enough to answer their email. They have also made it clear that the software you bought is a service that they keep ownership of. Funny, I didn’t see on the box that the game was for RENT only, to be terminated at their sole discretion!

Someone tried to convice me I would like World of Warcraft. I took a look at it and thought it looks like garbage. Seriously blocky with chunky textures. I would have preferred they go the crysis route and make a game that would look good for years to come as hardware catches up. I’m done looking at squares and triangles on a screen with jagged edges and vomitous colored lighting effects.

Looking back I thought the best thing about Diablo II was the sound, even with the network lag. I guess I’m done pointing and clicking on monsters because Blizzard won’t be seeing any more money from me.

DS Case MOD gone bad

Word to the wise, don’t mod your DS. The pictures look cool, but trust me, the product is garbage. I just finished putting together a chrome mod for my Nintendo DS lite, because I was tired of looking at the white one, and it was getting really dirty in the seams, etc. I bought a “shock DS lite buddy” mod online thinking I’d try it out. OMG this thing is cheap garbage. The finish already looks like it was sideswiped by a semi truck just from me manipulating it around the motherboard and screens. Not to mention that I had to shave pieces of the mold off to get the various parts to fit together in the first place. At any rate, I’m keeping this together just long enough to take a picture, and I’m putting my old, dirty white cover back on…

Chrome DS Lite MOD

Next up, plastic quality… Not only is it cheap feeling but the mounts for the screws are not tapped. In other words, when you first screw in a part you have to drill your own threads with the screw. Just hope you do it right the first time, there’s no going back when you’re grinding through cheap plastic.

The experience wasn’t all bad, I did get a 3-pointed star screwdriver out of the deal, which I needed to fix another unit anyway.

Finished Chrome MOD working

My wife agrees, now it feels like a cheap plastic toy from Dollar General, instead of a Nintendo DS. Oh well, back to the drawing board. At least now I can clean off the soda spills from inside the old case!

I crashed my Wii

Sadness, on the very last note of “Black Magic Woman” on Guitar Hero 3 my game crashed, just as I was about to post my personal best score. Doh! Interestingly enough I was able to re-create the error. Save up some star power for the very last note, then activate it at the end and hit the wammy bar like mad while you hold the last cord and voila! Your game is toast.

The good news is you can just unplug your wii and plug it back in and you’re good to go, the bad news is you’ll never see that high score again…
