So my windows live messenger crashes on startup this morning and I foolishly attempt to start it up again. Funny, there’s not start menu icon to the executable. Ok, so where’s the program? Program Files\MSN Messenger, apparently not, Windows\System32? nope. Remember when you could just find the install folder and get to the real executable? I guess those days are gone. I hope we’re not sinking into the mac world where all the guts are hidden from view.  I like the guts. You can make things happen there, write command line switches to make programs do what you want and stuff like that.  A search for msnmsgr.exe takes me where I need to go, but why should I have to? Genius! They moved it to C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger.  Sounds like marketing got its hands all over the coders, because no self respecting geek would come up with anything that uses “live” in the name.

Anyway, a little web searching leads me to a blog titled “messenger geek”.  If you’re actually a geek who loves IM that much that you host an entire blog about it, well, you’ve out-nerded me for sure. messengergeek I found the installer there so I could bypass that webinstall that apparently ignores that step where I get a menu item for the program. It’s the little things in life…
